INTERNATIONAL SUBMISSIONS ARE NOW CLOSED

International submissions for the Rio de Janeiro International Short Film Festival - Curta Cinema 2010 are closed.

The list of selected films will be announced by the end of September.

National submissions are open from June 10th to July 30th.


LA HABANA FILM FESTIVAL OF NEW LATIN AMERICAN CINE

Submissions to the 32th International Festival of the New Latin American Cinema, to be held in La Habana from December 2 to 12, are already opened. Submission Forms are available online at:

Ailton Franco Jr. is part of the jury at CURTOCIRC

Ailton Franco Jr., director of Franco Produções and Rio de Janeiro International Short Film Festival – Curta Cinema, is participating in this week as jury of the International Competition and the Explora Programs of CURTOCIRCUITO – VII Santiago de Compostela International Short Film Festival, in Spain. Make part of the jury the young actor Tamar Novas, who has starred in “Mar Adentro”, by Alejandro Amenabar, and in “Abrazos Rotos”, by Pedro Almodóvar, and the English director Emma Sullivan, who had competed in 2009 Cannes Festival and was considered one of British cinema promises.

VIVIAN OSTROVSKY

 Straight from Paris, Vivian arrives today to present her five shortfilms. Oneof them is a world premiere with references to the master Jacques Tati. Vivan is a woman in transit between New York, Paris, Rio, Moscow, Jerusalem , among other places.

Her pictures are marked by this transit - scenes which are taken from daily events from someone who is both intimate and visitor at the same time. Don't miss it!

Today, the National Competition 4, we will "Chapa" by Thiago Ricarte - screened at the Cannes Directors' Fortnight and Cinéfondation . The film shows the routine of a worker who is only interrupted by the visit of her daughter.
 
The same program, "Samba from Quadra," by Gustavo de Mello and Luiz Fernando Ferraz, is a record of the memory of the masters of samba. "JLG / PG" by Paolo Gregori and "Triangulum" by Melissa Dulius and Gustavo Jahn, lead us to travel different. In "Avaca" by Gustavo Rosa de Moura, the construction of a cow by two skilled butchers. Characters attached to their own daily lives look for something they don't know what is. And foreseing next Christmas, Fernanda Teixeira's film "Rende-vouz" brings lonely days of Santa to the screen. "Áurea", from Zeca Ferreira, is another portrait of a lonesome character who is attached to her routine. Bernardo Uzeda's "Imago" shows that space is not determinant to the feeling of being stuck. In a pioneering initiative, allying the motto of the Rio de Janeiro International Short Film Festival – Curta Cinema – CINEMA FOR EVERYONE to the preservation of the environment, the Festival has acquired carbon credits – a compensation for emissions of greenhouse gases by environmental actions undertaken by traditional Amazon communities themselves.

The NGO Rede Povos da Floresta (Forest Peoples’ Network) will issue the certificate and will perform the neutralization of 22 tons of greenhouse gases with the reforestation of the YORENKA ÃTAME (Wisdom of the Forest) area in Alto Juruá.  The Festival encountered in its partnership with the Ashaninka indigenous community – located in the border area between the state of Acre and Peru and which boasts audiovisual productions – the possibility of financing the monitoring of interventions in reforestation and recomposition of biodiversity and thus contribute to the preservation and dissemination of the environmental knowledge of the inhabitants of the forest which will be reflected in their audiovisual work.

Be on the Rio de Janeiro International Short Film

For the third straight year, the Rio de Janeiro International Short Film Festival – Curta Cinema 2009 will have the participation of the Young Jury.  This year, we will hold three workshops at the Caixa Cultural given by Professor Hernani Heffner (theory), Director Luciana Bezerra (production) and Critic Carlos Alberto de Mattos.

Short Film Screenplay Workshop

With the support of the National Cultural Fund of the Audiovisual Department of the Ministry of Culture and co-hosted by the Institute for the Preservation of the Memory of Brazilian Cinema, the short film screenplay workshop is one of the most popular of the Festival.  This year, we have already confirmed prizes to be awarded by Cinerama Brasilis, Dolby, Kodak, Quanta and Link Digital for the best project, to guarantee the production of a screenplay.  Keep an eye out for the opening of sign-ups at the end of September. This year the Rio de Janeiro International Short Film Festival – Curta Cinema 2009 will have, in addition to the projection spaces from previous years – Odeon Petrobras, Caixa Cultural, Ponto Cine,  Ascine-RJ, Cinemaison – we will also have sessions at the Livraria da Travessa in Barra da Tijuca.  Rain Network will contribute with the sessions in the Grupo Estação theaters, one week before and also during the Festival.  (Sept 8, 2009)

International Representation

The Rio de Janeiro International Short Film Festival – Curta Cinema 2009 has just closed agreements for institutional support with the Consulates of France and Mexico, the Embassy of Israel, the Goethe-Institut, the Camões Institute and the Cervantes Institute. (Sept 8, 2009)

The site of the Rio de Janeiro International Short Film Festival – Curta Cinema 2009 is under construction to become one more means of communication of the Festival with its audience. Soon, all will be able to access information on the films shown over the past 19 years. In addition, a new tool is being developed to allow the spectator to book sessions in advance. Submissions for the National and International Competitions are closed. We received 764 submissions from 20 states for the National Competition and Special Programs. For the International Competition, 2,793 films from 94 countries were submitted. The films selected for the National and International Competitions will be announced starting September 21.
