Dukhi Chamar, um camponês da casta dos Intocáveis, visita um brâmane a fim de saber a data oportuna para o casamento de sua filha. Exausto de febre, fome e trabalhos difíceis e humilhantes, o Intocável morre durante o encontro. Como é que este brâmene, que não pode tocar no corpo de um harijan (o Intocável), irá fazer para solucionar este problema? Satyajit Ray apresenta-nos uma obra densa, notavelmente interpretada, que denuncia o sistema de castas.

Synopsis English: Based on a story by the famous writer Prem Chand. About the inhumanity of untouchability in the traditional caste system of India. Dukhi Chamar, a peasant from the Untouchable caste visits a Brahman in order to know the opportune date for his daughter's marriage. Exhauted by fever, hunger and by hard and humiliating work, the Untouchable dies during the meeting. What will this Brahman do, once he is not allowed to touch the harijan's body (the Untouchable), to solve this problem? Satyajit Ray offers us a dense work, remarkably acted, that denounces the sate system.
